Breeding for Success - Mentally & Physically Sound Havanese

that Conform to the AKC Standard
Initial Study of Bloodlines and Breeding. Through attending dog shows, visiting breeders and studying bloodlines in the Havanese Yearbook, the Havanese Gallery Database and other websites, we found that the Havanese that most often attracted our attention descended from two great sires:  Ch. Starkette Pride of Wincroft ("Buster") and Ch. Los Perritos Wee Pantaloons ("Pan").

Ch. Starkette Pride of Wincroft ROMX ("Buster")  shown by the young Adam King, DVM, with his breeder, the late Jan Stark on the left. Buster was owned by Barbara and Michele Johannes of Wincroft Havanese.

Ch. Los Perritos Wee Pantaloons ROMX ("Pan"), who was owned and bred by Lynn Nieto, Los Perritos Havanese.

Although Buster and Pan were of different type, each sired some of the greatest show dogs and breeding stock of the Havanese breed.
Oeste Havanese - The Basis of Our Success.  As we began our breeding program, while vacationing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, we visited Julie Vogel of Oeste Havanese. There we met Ch. Oeste's Outlaw of San Juan ("Billy") and his sire Ch. Tapscott's the Dominator ("Tyler"), a Buster son who is a litter brother to Tapscott's Isadorable ("Issie"), a significant Havanese foundation bitch.  Over time, Julie became our trusted friend, mentor and co-breeder.  Her Havanese are the basis of our success.

On our first visit to Oeste Havanese, we met and took the above photograph of Julie Vogel's foundation sires, (L-R) the Buster son Ch. Tapscott's the Dominator ("Tyler"), Tyler's son Ch. Oeste's Outlaw of San Juan ("Billy"), and the German import Ch. Zorro vom Salzetal ("Zorro').  Tyler and Billy forever changed our lives.

Tina - Our First Buster Daughter.  When Julie had a litter sired by Buster, she allowed us to bring home Ch. Oeste's Fame de la Tierra ("Tina").   Tina was a 3/4 sibling to Ch. Fuzzy Farm Devil in a Blue Dress ("Monica") and Ch. Fuzzy Farm Devil Made Me Do It ("Sweetpea"), a top-winning brother and sister that we greatly admired.  Tina's beauty and outstanding conformation were matched by her intelligence and extraordinary personality.

Cori - Our Pan Daughter.  We also wanted a Pan daughter, and are grateful that Debbie Chambers allowed us to have a Pan daughter out of her Buster daughter, Ch. Wincroft Bea-Atitude of Skyline ("Bea").  This Pan daughter grew up to become Ch. Skyline's Corazon de la Tierra, R.O.M. ("Cori").  Cori is synonymous with sweetness, and is the dam of three outstanding youngsters that have prominent places in our home and breeding program.

Havanese Club of America National Championship in San Mateo, CA in August 2010.
Note her resemblance to her sire, Pan, shown above.

Bela & Bonita - The Billy ex Buster-Daughter Cross.  Awhile after we acquired Cori, we fell head over heels in love with Bela while visiting Julie's home one Christmas. Julie allowed us to adopt Bela, and to co-own her litter mate Bonita.  Bela is now Ch. Oeste's Outlaw Angel and her sister Bonita is GCh. Oeste's Outlaw Queen, R.O.M.  These beautiful sisters are sired by Billy and out of Ch. Wincroft's Irish Rose of Amor ("Katie"), a daughter of Buster and Ch. Amor's Gucci Girl ("GiGi"), an Issie daughter.

Bart - Another Successful Billy ex Buster-Daughter Cross.  Several months thereafter, Julie brought a stunning young male home from Pennsylvania. She eventually offered us the opportunity to co-own and sponsor this stand-out male, BISS GCh Oeste's Havnfun Playin an Outlaw ("Bart"), who is a Billy son out of a Buster daughter.  Bart was our first "special," which refers to a champion show dog that is campaigned for national rankings.

Tina's Passing.  We thought our world was complete, but then our hearts were deeply saddened by our untimely loss of our beloved Tina, as a result of an out-of-state veterinary mistake.

Joy - Our Second Buster Daughter.  Tina is irreplaceable, but we are  grateful to Buster's owners, Barbara and Michele Johannes, for offering us a 3/4 sister to Tina, Wincroft Pride and Joy de la Isla ("Joy"), so that we would have a Buster daughter for our breeding program.   Joy was very different in type from Tina, but she had the conformation and pedigree to produce great individuals, and she did!

Wincroft Pride and Joy de la Isla ("Joy"), our second daughter of Ch. Starkette Pride of Wincroft ROMX.  Joy is out of Ch. Wincroft's Knick of Time of Brycecreek (Knicki), and a litter sister to Ch. Wincroft's Bea-Atitude of Skyline ("Bea"), the dam of our Cori and of the #1 ranked Havanese in 2012, MBIS GCh. Marcosa's Slip Slidin Away of Skyline ("Slider").

Joy's Billy Daughters:  Feliz, Lucia & Merrily.  We bred Joy to Billy, repeating the successful Billy ex Buster-daughter cross, and as the saying goes, "the rest is history."  Joy produced Feliz in her first litter, and Lucia and Merrily in her second litter, by Billy.   Feliz is MRBIS MBISS Gold GCh. Champion Oeste's Flirt'n with an Outlaw, R.O.M., the #1 Havanese in America in 2013.  Feliz' little sister Lucia is BIS GCh. Oeste's Stealing the Starlight.  Lucia went out to get her grand championship, and came home with a Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show in short order.   Merrily shares her sisters' great structure and athletic ability, and promises to follow in her dam's footsteps as a notable producer.

Marcosa Havanese.  Not content to rest on the laurels of these outstanding bloodlines, we watched the success of Hannah Kolzow's breeding program.  Hannah's breeding program has produced many notable show and breeding dogs through incorporating the best of Pillowtalk (German) lineages and select French lines, as well as Buster's lineage.   We have outcrossed through Hannah 's Can. BIS GCh Marcosa's Sweet Island Romance ("Rolo") and his nephew BISS GCh Marcosa's Always Watching You ("Inc").

Cruz, Son of Billy and Cori, our Pan Daughter.  We also bred our Pan daughter, Cori, to Billy.  With Pan's lines, as well as with the strength of her dam, a Buster daughter who is Joy's litter sister, Cori produced beautiful puppies.  We were smitten by a showy young male who acted as if he owned the world and everything in it.  Cruz, a/k/a Ch. Oeste's Top Gun, grew into a well balanced individual with a tremendous love of life.  He is now proving himself as an outstanding sire, befitting of his great heritage.

At Home.  The foregoing history may make it seem as though we have many Havanese at home, but we share our dogs with our co-breeders, friends and several wonderful families.   The Havanese who live with us are the focus and purpose of our lives, and are a continuing source of love and joy.

Our Philosophy.  All glory - including show ring wins - is fleeting, but the love we share with our Havanese and other sentient beings is never lost.  We are grateful to the Havanese who have brought happiness to ours and others' lives.  We are  inspired by our frienship with other Havanese breeders, owners, and the families who adopt our Havanese, as well as our handlers, Bill & Taffe McFadden, and the McFadden's assistants, including Tomoko Saeki, Jamie Lee Larkman, Rachel Adams, Remy Smith-Lewis and Daniel Chavez.
